Farr Associates designed the headquarters for Christy Webber Landscapes as part of the Midwest’s first eco-industrial park on a reclaimed 12-acre brownfield site in Chicago. Located on a rail spur to reduce the need to truck topsoil and gravel, the location serves the landscape industry, completes local supply chains and creates markets for the reuse of “scrap” landscape materials. The East-West orientation of the building maximizes natural light, which in turn, minimizes lighting energy by 40%.
Designed to LEED Platinum standards, 12.5% of the building’s annual energy usage is harnessed from renewable sources such as active solar thermal water and air, geo-thermal and an 80’ vertical wind turbine. Low VOC paint, carpet, adhesive and wood products improve indoor air quality, while the extensive green roof absorbs significant amounts of rainwater, thereby reducing the amount of stormwater filtered into sewer systems. The green roof also aids in the cooling of the building and surrounding environment, reducing the urban heat island effect.
